London’s Oriental Rug & Carpet Auctions

Christie's auction house London will be holding their Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds Including Oriental Rugs sale on 27th April 2023 at their King street gallery. highlights of the sale include a rare 15th/16th century Anatolian Phoenix in Octagon rug (lot 195), a 17th century Ghirlandaio rug from West Anatolia (lot 196), and a late 16th/ early 17th century Holbein variant rug (lot 197). Also other rugs and carpets to be noted are an early Borjalu rug (lot 179), a beautiful Persian Mohtasham Kashan carpet (lot 221), and many fine examples of Caucasian rugs. Also in London, Sotheby's auction house will hold their similarly titled sale, Arts of the Islamic World and India, Including Fine Rugs and Carpets. This sale will take place the day before Christie's on the 26th April 2023. Highlights of this sale are a fragment of the Ardabil carpet comprising of a boarder cartouche from possibly the most famous pair of Persian carpets ever produced, these carpets represent the pinnacle of Safavid carpet production. Also lot 141 a fine Persian Mohtasham Kashan carpet depicting Nizami's Half Peykar, and a previously unpublished Lotto carpet (lot 157). Olympia Auctions will be holding their Asian and Islamic Works of Art sale on the 26th April 2023, the sale will comprise of 294 lots from a number of private collections. Across the pond Bonhams Skinner sale rooms will be hosting Woven Gardens: The Jim Dixon Collection. The auction will take place on 27th April 2023 at their Boston Gallery. Jim Dixon amassed a fine collection of rugs and carpets from the Caucasus, Turkey, Turkestan and China.
